Without defining the  Decision Making   it is hard
to imagine an oranization functioning.

So far, by abstracting and grouping tasks as Functional Elements
and by thinking about the organization through Working Groups,
we established structure that enables us to asses whether work gets done or not, and how much of what is planed gets achieved.

To be able to say that Decision Making is defined,
following parameters need to be set:

   set   Type [consensus,vote...]
   set   Sovereign Location [email/meetings]
   set   Participation Right (who gets it)

 

Types of decision making like consensus and voting are not new concepts and information about it is widely available in the form of texts freely available on the Web, and books. We'll leave it out of this presentation for now.

Sovereign Location means following: let's imagine a state wide organization, attac-britain, for example. Now, let's say that, for whatever reasons, participants can not meet often face to face, yet, inbetween those meetings there are decisions that can not be postponed to be made. The question is whether the email lists can be used instead for decision making. That's we called here soverign location. In some cases, it can be 'face to face meetings', in some, beacuse of geographical nature of organization that isn't possible, and 'email' lists have been used instead.

Participation right in decision making is essential to set, especially in diverse organizations where different models of organizing and participation are used and therefore little can be assumed.
In our experience, not setting this parameter can have lethal consenquences for the organization. More on this later.
