The definition of what constitutes a cooperative is maintained by the
International Cooperative Alliance, which also gives a list of values that
cooperatives should share. These include: self-help, self-responsibility,
democracy, equality, equity, and solidarity. In addition ‘in the tradition of
their founders, cooperative members believe in the ethical values of honesty,
openness, social responsibility and caring for others’ (information from the
Cooperative Union Ltd., Manchester).
