Uniparty System

Their democracy does not suit us

I would like to say here few more words about our democratization, about democratization of our country. I know that abroad they will say this time too, like they always did so far: however, it is an uniparty system. They can't get out of their heads that uniparty system. They put emphasis it on it all the time and whoever comes to Yugoslavia objects to it. We have explained it to them hundreds of thousands of times why that isn't an uniparty system and why here there can not be what they have. That would, according to my understanding, at our stage of development and in connection with our way and type of construction of socialism, look as if someone has built a new car and then placed a cart to drive in it. Their democracy does not suit us: it is an old democracy, which was, however, after the feudal system, good, but which has outlived itself. It is formal. At today's stage of social development, in twentieh century, people seek something further, they seek that democracy isn't formal, but real, with material base: that it doesn't mean just that one has the right to criticize, but that one gets the possibility to eat, to shop, to get employed to develop oneself through culture, to be equal with equals etc. Today, there are many and many things which can not be done the way, and through the system like it is in the West.

We are explaining to them lost of things of our internal character, our specific circumstances. We're explaining to them that this kind of our way is conditioned by specifics of our country and level of consciousness of our people. We're explaining to them that we were disunited for centuries and centuries, that we lived in eternal wars, that we all the time battled and defended that various conquerors do not penetrate towards the West. While they had the chance to develop, we were holding a gun in one hand and a sword in another, and we ended up being a bit more warrior like people. In short, we could not create by all means an unified state out of these various nationalities, although those nations are fully related. We're explaining to them that we still have in the consciousness of people a lot or remains of the old, various negative instances which are already non existent in the contemporary cultured society in the West, and that we had to use certain measures

of compulsion to channel the development in democratic sense.
